As a research-based pharmaceutical company, our responsibility is to develop medications with considerable therapeutic benefits, particularly in areas of unmet medical need. We specialize in neurology and play a leading role in the field of Alzheimer’s research. We successfully developed Memantine, the first active agent in the world for treating moderate to severe stages of Alzheimer’s dementia, and we are constantly working on new approaches to fight age-related diseases. Doctors, patients, and families place their trust in medical progress for neurological conditions, whether it’s Alzheimer’s disease, tinnitus, or neurological movement disorders such as dystonia or spasticity. Our aim is to offer new treatment options in these areas. Merz also sets new standards in aesthetic and medical dermatology by anticipating and fulfilling the needs of doctors and patients. Building on a successful history in skin treatment, Merz offers a leading-edge range of products for minimally invasive treatments.

Medical progress through research

Research is at the heart of everything we do. Through targeted specialization and deep collaboration with renowned experts and institutes, we achieve the strongest and most efficient research and development operation.

As a company with our own research and development department, Merz has focused on areas where there is considerable medical need, particularly neurological and psychiatric diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, tinnitus, and neuromuscular disorders. Another important focus is Medical and aesthetic dermatology. Merz invests about 20% of our revenue in research and development. With facilities in Europe and the US, we have access to a breadth of research functions. In recent years, we steadily increased the number of highly qualified employees and expenditures made for new substances and indications. Furthermore, Merz has built an international research network and supports the knowledge exchange between universities and industry by honoring a guest professor every year. We benefit from a culture that encourages rapid decision making and data driven discourse, which guarantee efficient processes in research and development. Only those substances with new mechanisms of action or significantly improved therapeutic benefits pass through preclinical and clinical development.

As Clinical Dermatology is one of Merz’ USA core competencies, Merz US focus its development in areas such as fungal infections, acne and xerosis. One other area of focus for R&D in US is on our Mederma product line. Both areas are served by active ingredients that are developed in Germany as well as licensed from other companies.

Currently, Merz USA has several products in development and planned to be submitted to FDA for review to compete in the clinical dermatology market.
